Ah yes, Wednesday, a day of guaranteed bliss for fans of downloadable content (at least those with a 360). This week’s additions to the online service include an update of a classic, and an update of, well, a game not that old.
Speedball 2 remains one of the most influential futuristic sports games ever created, and for $10, you gain the original along with a flashier version with a 3-D makeover. This is a game with a full season mode before most realistic sports titles offered the same feature. Prior to this, the game found home on countless pieces of hardware, from the mainstream (Genesis, Game Boy, Master System) to the obscure (CD32). It’s a classic multi-player affair with fast paced action and a fun rule set. Oddly, the demo doesn’t allow you to test out the 3-D update.
E4 is not the sequel to the gaming expo known as E3, but Every Extend Extra Extreme. Produced by Q Entertainment, the same crew responsible for sucking your life away with Lumines, E4 is a sequel to the PSP title (minus the Extreme in the title). It’s an odd little experiment, a shooter that doesn’t let the player shoot. Instead, you flow with the music, waiting for the right time to blow yourself up to release particles that destroy anything they touch. Ridiculous scores, hectic gameplay, and completely original style are present in this updated edition of a sadly obscure PSP success.
