Another Grand Theft Auto, another batch of controversy. Here’s a rundown of some of the more popular stories concerning the game:
Always vocal UK Labour MP Keith Vaz says he wasn’t surprised about a stabbing in a line amongst those waiting for the game. The problem with his views? The person doing the stabbing wasn’t there for the game.
A Knoxville psychiatrist can’t quite comprehend why adults would even want to play it, and offers a warning for parents as per the norm. The story basically sums up WHY adults want to play it, including nudity, violence, and all kinds of naughty language.
The Daily Show had their take on the launch. It’s not much, but it’s still worth a few laughs.
Presidential candidate Barak Obama mentioned it during a campaign stop, though seemed to actually take the logical stance that the parents should be the ones protecting their kids.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving have demanded the game be re-rated AO because you can drive drunk. Killing cops with guns? Stabbing hookers? Kicking random people to death? A-OK. Driving drunk? That’s an AO.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and mother of a slain police officer spoke out against the game. While it’s sad to hear of the loss, blaming a game that had no known correlation between your sons death seems like you’re reaching for answers that aren’t there. In Philadelphia, cops are buying the game themselves. Hmm.
New Zealand decided they wanted a piece of action, calling for an outright ban on the game. A member of Parliament cited one of the highest crime rates in the world as a need for the ban.
A genius decided to steal a copy of the game, and unsurprisingly, got caught. Make sure to wave for the camera!
Finally, a LA Times writer slammed the game stating it may be art, but all it does it profit from violence.
