The date was 9/9/99. On that day, Sega launched the Dreamcast. Alongside hotly anticipated titles like Sonic Adventure, NFL 2K, and Ready to Rumble, Namco released Soul Calibur. Previously known as Soul Blade to PlayStation owners, Soul Calibur was an immense, addictive, and involving 3-D fighter. It was graphically lush, and it’s booming soundtrack sat behind some of the best mechanics of all time.
Now, Namco is bringing the unforgettable (and even with the sequels, still unmatched) fighter to the Live Arcade. There is a catch however. It won’t be going online, at least as of now. As with the Dreamcast release which was done before the Dreamcast network was set up, this will be local play only with leaderboards being the only form of international competition. To say this is a missed opportunity is an understatement.
The game still plays great and makes for one of the best reasons to break out the Dreamcast still to this day. Even the visuals hold up nicely. It’s a shame though if the package doesn’t go for the multi-player online aspect. Come on Namco. Slap a $15 price tag on it and give us online play if you have to.
