It may not be Christmas, but Live users have been given the gift of three demos this week.
The first is Turning Point, a game which looks like its concept will be better than the game itself. What if America didn’t enter World War II? This would have happened as Nazi forces descend on New York with an all out assault. You’re a construction worker who snags a gun and begins popping the enemy down streets as a bombing run is carried out. Sadly, the miserable collision detection, pathetic AI, and bland graphics engine are downers. This is a huge letdown given the potential in the concept.
Next up is The Club from Sega. Imagine a light gun shooter pushed into a third person perspective with an emphasis on flashy kills and you get The Club. The style give the game the flavor of Stranglehold, though it furthers the concept by adding points for spectacular kills and requiring enough points to pass the level. The shooting mechanics never feel quite right, and it’s difficult to keep combos chained together with the stunt system set to the A button. It looks fine, the action is fun, but doesn’t feel like it’s coming together.
Finally, Devil May Cry 4 from Capcom is the big one, and one of the top titles of 2008. The demo allows for two wildly different levels to be played with. It carries a distinct Capcom style fans know, and the visuals are truly amazing. The combat feels familiar compared with previous games, though hardly needed changing in the first place. While the demo doesn’t offer much in terms of puzzle solving, it does deliver with cinematics and visual flair.
