Nintendo (Finally) Revisits Punch-Out

Consoles, Wii

Gee, it’s been since the mid-life of the SNES since we’ve seen a new Punch-Out game. Think it’s about time for new one? Yeah, so does Nintendo.

The new trailer for this Wiiboot (heh) showcases a couple of returning favorites, including Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo. While the characters look great, the dim, dark, and bland arena is really a departure from from previous games. What happened to the brightly-lit, colorful arenas of old? At the very least, the remixed theme is awesome.

Also, it doesn’t delve into the control scheme either. Motion controls, simply put, won’t work. Punch-Out is based purely on precision. Dodging, counter-punching, and landing those critically timed super uppercuts needs to be done with a d-pad. Include motion controls all you want Nintendo, but you damn well better offer traditional controls too.
