It’s a three-peat this week for the Arcade, one week before the overpriced Summer of Arcade begins. What does this week deliver?
Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
One of the greatest point-and-click adventure games ever made comes to the 360 in remade form. The visuals have undergone a heavy hi-def remake, and while the animation stands out, the spectacular voice acting and humor is left intact. This is a steal at $10, especially if you don’t have a version of the game lying around elsewhere. It remains just as charming, funny, and enjoyable.
Madballs in… Babo Invasion
Well, isn’t this is a surprise. This top-down shooter actually offers quite a lot despite the license. Avatar support is included for this simple yet enjoyable title, in which the player controls one of the Madballs rolling through various levels blasting away enemies. The game shines even more in multi-player thanks a wonderful set of smooth mechanics and accurate shooting. It grabs you from the minute you start moving through the easy to navigate levels, and realizes how fun the Madballs are to play around with. Another $10 gem this week.
Tour De France 2009
Okay, one solitary bonus point for not making players rapidly tap buttons to move. That could be tiresome. However, the market for something like this is slim. The player has no control over their selected rider, but simply chooses his speed and various actions. While the number of riders on-screen is impressive, the visuals take a hit in the form of Dreamcast-quality character models and flat-out painful backgrounds that aim even lower. It’s possible to see stratgey finds finding value here, but most will balk at the rather high $10 price considering what you get.
