Dungeon Fighter Online, developed by Neople, a studio of Nexon, and released in Asia, went online in North America a few weeks ago, and looks very appetizing.
Quite simply, Dungeon Fighter Online a classic side-scrolling beat-em-up, in the same vein as Streets of Rage, with heavy role-playing elements. The best part? It’s free-to-play. So you get a great fighting game with engrossing rpg elements in one package. Of course since it’s online, the social aspect of a massively multiplayer online game comes into play as well, further enriching the experience.
You get five classes to choose from: slayer (swordsman), fighter (classic fist-fighting), gunner, mage and priest. As players rise in level, they can branch into subclasses and develop newer skills and powers. While this sounds like generic MMO slur, skills and abilities are all the more dynamic because the game is so action-oriented, and thus have a much greater bearing on game-play than a simple animation change and damage increase, like one might find in generic point-and-click MMOs. Dungeon Fighter Online also allows for player versus player interaction in arenas. (It would have been strange if they didn’t considering the nature of the game).
Dungeon Fighter Online is yet another MMOG that, like Valkyrie Sky, blurs the lines of genre’s for the sake of fun. And Dungeon Fighter Online is definitely fun. It is always encouraging to see a developer put out a title that stands out from the generic norm, and actually tries something different. Give Dungeon Fighter Online a shot. It has earned that right.
