Imagine you spent a few years re-doing an entire game’s sprites in hi-def for a spectacular re-do of a classic. Then, that hard work seems to pay off with strong sales… or at least until a simple re-release comes along to crush all of that hard work.
Such is the disappointing case with Super Street Fighter II HD and Marvel vs Capcom 2, the latter of which managed to outsell the years-in-development SSFIITHDR. Capcom’s Cliff Svensson did not state specifics as to how wide the gap was, just that it exists.
It is not terribly difficult to pinpoint why this happened, as the insane pacing, general vibrancy, and active brawling of the crossover carries a wider appeal (not to mention the licensing). SSFII HD is fine, but certainly aiming at an audience with a deeper appreciation for the genre.
Still, it sort of disappointing to know a simple port with little work involved beyond emulation and online play can beat out a fine piece of gaming art. The obviously aged sprites of the Marvel title, despite their own levels of fine detail, are easily out of place against the high-res backdrops.
