Earlier this year, news of a new Tomb Raider game was leaked through a job posting. It seems as though another job posting may hint at a multiplayer aspect to the game.
The first job posting, exposed the latest Tomb Raider title when developers Crystal Dynamics, developer for the series since 2003, labeled the game as “one of the most prestigious AAA franchises in the industry.”
The latest job post by Crystal Dynamics states that they are looking for a lead designer for “future AAA title development for Xbox 360 and PS3.” The role of the designer will be to focus on “Multiplayer vision and design effort” for the title. The developer also stated that working on “multiplayer maps” will be part of the position.
It seems as though the game being referenced could quite possibly be the latest Tomb Raider. In an interview last year with Crystal Dynamics’ creative director, Eric Lindstrom, questions were asked with regards to mulitplayer:
“We thought about it in Legend, we thought about it even harder for Underworld. Ultimately, we decided not to do it, not only because Lara is a solo operator – especially in this game – but we really wanted to focus in on a certain type of experience. And that experience was all about adventure. It isn’t out of the question, however, we consider this every time, and next time could be the one.”
Publisher Eidos has also stated that they were looked for ways to revitalize the series.
Exactly how multiplayer would work for the title is unknown, but it may well be what’s needed to redefine the franchise. Although this still remains a rumor for now, it is none the less quite an exciting possibility.
