You Got Some Super Smash in My Star Wars

The Wii edition of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 has a multiplayer mode that borrows from a number of fighting games. Taken at a quick glance, one could mistaken the mode for Nintendo’s Super Smash Brothers series. Four players can battle for supremacy by choosing from eight Star Wars characters and fighting on various stages. The action is frenetic and played on a side scroller perspective with plenty of dashing, Force powers, and items. And hey, who wouldn’t want to see Darth Vader taking on Boba Fett?

For Wii owners, it’s certainly a nice addition. Though the Big N is known for providing some of the best gameplay experiences on any console, third party support has been historically lacking. LucasArt’s multiplayer mode looks to add an actual incentive to go for the motion controller option.

Personally, Super Smash is still one of my favorite fighting games (that’s Melee mind you, Brawl incorporated a number of disdainful additions) as it’s a superb four player local experience. This, the local multiplayer, is probably one of the Wii’s greatest strengths as most core online players have Xbox Live or PSN. It’s good to see LucasArts pick up on this and to possibly deliver a fun diversion for the one screen crowd.
