Trion Worlds Hacked, No Evidence of Full Credit Card Compromise

December 23, 2011 - Gaming, Massive, Multiplayergames.com, News, PC - no comments

Trion Worlds has reported a breach in their account database, though they state that there is no evidence the intruders accessed full customer credit card information. According to Trion, the hacked database contained usernames, encrypted passwords, customer ages and contact information (billing and e-mail addresses), and the first and last four digits of customer credit cards and their expiration dates. This report can be read on the official Trion Worlds site, a copy of which was also sent to all Trion customers via e-mail.

Trion assures its customers that they are strengthening their security as they continue the investigation alongside external help. As a result, players will be required to change their password the next time they log in, as well as reconnect their mobile authenticators.

Trion also urges customers to keep a close watch on their personal and financial accounts (like bank accounts) for any abnormal activity. The report also links customers to the three credit bureaus and details where to access their free report, as well as how to place a freeze on credit reports.

Despite the breach, Trion does not anticipate any interruption in service: players can continue playing RIFT without disruption. To compensate players for the inconvenience, Trion is offering all RIFT customers 3 days of free playtime once they have reset their password and security information. Trion is also presenting players with an in-game item called the Moneybag’s Purse, which increases looted money by 10%.

There are many alternatives to paying a subscription fee with credit cards nowadays. PayPal comes to mind immediately, though prepaid credit and game cards are also great options. There is no reason to attach a credit or bank account to a game, and considering the rash of hacked networks and databases this year, it’s probably best that you don’t. The best way to avoid identity theft in this respect is to prevent it altogether.

If you have not already done so, visit the official RIFT website to reset your password and security information.

The full report can be read on the Trion Worlds website.
