A problem that has plagued many shooters is the inevitable division of the playerbase when they introduce DLC with new maps. Starhawk has ingeniusly nipped this problem in the bud but making sure that all future DLC maps will be free to everyone, ensuring nobody get’s left out of any matchmaking online due to not downloading premium DLC maps.
It happens a lot in games like Halo or Call of Duty. If you buy premium DLC maps, you can play with anyone else who bought them. But if you don’t buy the DLC, you won’t be able to play with anyone who has the maps installed to their hard drive. All this divides the playerbase and the matchmaking results. So being the cool guys they are, Lightbox is going to avoid fragmenting their playerbase by making all their maps free.
Don’t worry about quality DLC though. There will be premium DLC available for players. Just none that involves maps that will separate the playerbase.
