Lately, I’ve realized I do not need normal television since I’ve been watching shows on my Xbox 360 through Netflix and Hulu. But now another challenger appears in the form of Redbox Instant and it’ll be exclusive to Xbox 360.
Major Nelson brought word that the app, brought to you by Verizon, will be available for everyone “in the very near future” with a combination streaming/disc subscription. Think Netflix before the price hiking fiasco. While streaming Redbox’s catalog will no doubt be the biggest draw (Dark Knight Rises?), subscribers will also be getting four one-night credits to use at physical kiosks in the wild. Subscribers can either go for $8 per month for DVDs or $9 per month for Blu-rays, in addition to their streaming rights. And if subscriptions aren’t your thing, you can still use the app to purchase and rent Redbox’s digital titles. Convenient!
You can visit Redbox’s beta page to see if you can score yourself an early access code, which includes one month of free access to the service. No mention if anything like this will be extended to the more recent addition of games to Redbox but we can dream, right?
