Ghostbusters Wii Has DS Connectivity, Multi-player

While some of the initial screens of the Wii version of the upcoming Ghostbusters game were, shall we say, less than impressive, there are some advantages.

First up, four player split-screen multi-player. While it doesn’t seem like this will be co-op through the main story, which would only seem appropriate (since, you know, there are four Ghostbusters), there as some modes being discussed. Two teams will go up to trap ghosts, likely in a versus mode to see who can bag the most. Two in the box, ready to go, we be fast and they be slow. The PS2 version will also carry this feature.

Next up, the Wii version will have DS connectivity. The tiny handheld will act as the Ghostbusters PKE meter, the device the team used in the movies to track the ghosts energy and find them. That is mighty cool, though how effective it actually is remains to be seen.

Doom 4 Announced, Everyone Back to Hell

Someone call The Rock… err, wait. No, don’t do that.

Series creator id Software is currently looking for some help to get the project moving forward. Joystiq presumes, logically so, that the game will run off the company’s Tech 5 engine. While the Unreal engine dominates the gaming space, every time id comes up with something new, it’s shock and awe. Can anyone forget the first time they saw screens for Doom 3?

The important stuff, like platforms, release dates, or general information? It’s obviously too early for any of that, but we can all hope this doesn’t turn into Duke Nukem Forever. Ah, who are we kidding. That’s not even possible. Nothing can top that.

Nintendo Claims Online Made For All

friendcodes.jpg

In a classic piece of PR BS, Nintendo of America’s Eric Walter had this to say to some of the criticism the company has taken for the Wii’s online service:

Different services do things differently. Nintendo’s three goals for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection are to make the service free, easy and safe. These goals are there not just for young players, but also older ones and new players. Nintendo is bringing a lot of new people into the world of video games, and we want to reduce barriers while making the online experience as enjoyable as possible.

Done laughing? No, neither am I.

Walters apparently believes that grandpa is going to grasp finding his own friend code, sending that to a friend, having them reply back to accept it, going into a game, finding another friend code, sending that to a friend, and then maybe if all that technology works, play a game with someone he knows.

We live in a country where parents are too oblivious to even use simple parental controls, and Nintendo now states they can deal with friend codes? You’re not reducing barriers, you’re creating more of them and scaring that same group away. While the Wiimote is simple enough to grasp, the other parts of the technology are far more terrifying than a multi-buttoned controller.

GTA IV Comparison Video; 360 vs. PS3

Posted by MPG_PuzzleFighterFan on Tuesday 6th of May 2008 12:18:42 PM

For the eccentric fanboy, the always reliable GameVideos has a direct comparison between the two versions of the new Grand Theft Auto. The difference? Good luck finding any. Once could say the PS3 colors are slightly richer, but that could just as easily be the means of recording. There are also a few frame rate hitches during the driving sequences on the PS3, but it’s so minor, you may not even notice.

So, does this finally settle the debate between which hardware is more powerful? You have one of the most complex, involving games ever made, and both systems have running nearly flawless. Fanboys, seriously, please stop. Make everyone happier.

Another Set of Street Fighter IV Characters Revealed

balrogsf4.jpg

Two veteran bosses are making a return for the next installment of this iconic franchise. Balrog, boxer extraordinaire, the first boss players encountered in Street Fighter II is first up here. His character model remains relatively accurate to the original sprite, although now in 3-D. His charge punches are still intact if the screen shots are any indication.

Vega is the second inclusion, an Italian with a mask and Wolverine like claw. Like Balrog, Vega seems to have most of his specials intact, including the swan dive. However, his roll which led to an easy multi-hit combo isn’t pictured. Again, the character model is respectful to the original with the tattoo across his chest that was so distinctive.

Check out the eight screens over at Kotaku.

GTA IV Launch Marred by Glitches

Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of this insanely hot title are experiencing some issues. Some people have been experiencing freezing during the extended opening cinematic. Kotaku called a rep from Rockstar who claimed only 60 GB PS3s. They also confirmed the Xbox 360 version is experiencing the same issues, though which models are no mentioned.

On the other hand, Joystiq claims they cannot confirm Xbox 360 issues. They were told to erase the install and save data and start over from scratch. The site is also reporting on sever problems with the PS3 edition. Can someone say overload?

From personal experience on a 360 Elite about two hours in, everything has been running smoothly. Not even a hiccup has been noted. At the very least, the glitch seems to be happening before player get hours into the game and are forced to start over.

Still playing This is Football 2005? What? You Are?

Seriously?

Well, you’re apparently the only one. Said footie title and others are going offline forever. June 30th will be the final day these games will see multi-player action online. Notable drop outs include Twisted Metal Black Online and Everybody’s (i.e., Hot Shots) Golf. Two handheld PSP titles are included in this money saving venture including Lemmings (which hasn’t been out that long for those paying attention), and sub-par World Tour Soccer 2.

Hardcore gamers will mourn the loss of music title Amplitude, a cult classic. Shooter fans can cry at the loss of Syphon Filter: Omega Strain. You can view the full list and cry on your own time at Sony’s UK help site.

Madden ‘09 Features Brett Favre, New AI

To go along with the 20th anniversary celebration, EA Sports Madden series will feature a first: a retiree on the cover. Brett Favre retired after last season, and is certainly worthy of the cover. It’s not his first game cover, but the first time he’s graced Madden.

Other new additions thanks to this GameTap interview include online leagues, play tracking which provides feedback on the players style, and a new training center with a holographic style. The leagues are one of those “it’s about freakin’ time” additions, featuring 32-player capability, one for each team in the NFL. Maybe the exclusivity will finally pay off.

Xbox Live Call Out List: Volume IV

Xbox Live etiquette, in a perfect world, would be common sense. However, it’s inevitable that at some point, you’re going to run into someone who decided to pay $50 a year simply to ruin your day. These people come in a variety of categories, and not all commit the same offenses.

To see the full list of potential offenses, see the list. To see those who failed to follow the rules, keep reading.

Gamertag: youlnevergethis
Game: Halo 3 Team Deathmatch
Awards: That’s Gay Guy, Walk Away

Seemingly dissatisfied with the game, this player decided to continually remark about how gay the game was. A lot. Actually, constantly. A few minutes in, he apparently had enough and dropped himself out of the game leaving teammates stranded in The Pit already down by six points.

Gamertag: GetYourHelmetOn
Game: Halo 3 Team Deathmatch
Awards: Outside Conversator, You’re a ***** Guy

Beyond carrying on a separate conversation with a friend about what they were going to do after the match, Helmet broke a cardinal rule: being a racist idiot. As an opponent cleanly jumped a grenade throw, Helmet blurted out “He sure did jump high. He must be black.” That right there? That lands you on the list.

Gamertag: U TWEEKING JO
Game: Halo 3 Team Doubles
Awards: Losing Trash Talker

Sigh. Look buddy, you lost and it wasn’t close. However, launching into a non-stop tirade using nothing but a four letter word that rhymes with “suck” doesn’t help your cause. Actually, it makes you look like someone who doesn’t take loss well and lands you here on this oh so funny list for all to see.

New Street Fighter IV Trailer Shows Roster

Posted by MPG_PuzzleFighterFan on Tuesday 22nd of April 2008 05:35:58 AM

Things to look for in this latest look at Capcom’s anticipated sequel:

The new 100 hand slap looks completely natural.

No polygon clipping when Zangief grabs Blanka. It’s a clean grasp which many fighting games struggle with.

Guile actually lip syncing the words as he does specials.

Ryu’s cringing face when he gets caught by the dragon punch. That’s detail, and almost makes up for the lack puking from Street Fighter II.

The horrific costume design of Abel who looks pulled from a boss battle in Final Fight 2.

Vipers incredible looking flying flaming kick. Fei Long has some competition.

Microsoft’s GTA IV Marketing to Match Halo 3 Numbers

gta41.jpg

It’s scary to think that anything could match up to Halo 3’s marketing push. You could pre-order Halo at 7-11. How much bigger can you get?

According to Microsoft, not much, but they can match it. The push for the Xbox 360 version of the game will be backed by a massive ad campaign. Why is Microsoft doing this? Simple. They spent $50 million dollars to secure exclusive content for the game. They need to make that number back somehow.

It’s certainly a rarity, if not a first, for a company to get behind a third party, non-exclusive title. Can you imagine Sony hyping up, say, Kane and Lynch like this? The content for Rockstar’s behemoth had better be spectacular for all the money Microsoft is putting behind it. If not, this could be another financial blunder along the lines of buying Rare or the now infamous three red lights debacle.

Halo Circa 1999

Posted by MPG_PuzzleFighterFan on Sunday 20th of April 2008 12:01:05 PM

Remember in the first Halo when the Covenant Elite rushed you with energy swords? Oh wait, that was Halo 2.

Originally though, that wasn’t the case. Master Chief was nameless, he looked thinner, and ran around in third person. This original Apple keynote where they revealed the game for the first time offers an interesting perspective on the game, pushing it’s then incredible graphics. The main Halo theme is already in place, meaning maestro Marty O’Donnell was in place from the get go. Many of the ship designs are almost spot-on with their final versions.

For a deeper look, long defunct PC gaming magazine Incite (which also had a console based spin-off of the same name and retailed for only a $1) had a preview on its included CD-ROM. It shows the early physics, and gives and idea of how the third person view would have worked. AI hasn’t been programmed, and Master Chief is still nameless. The foundation is there, but Halo came a long way before it landed on the Xbox.
