Playstation 3 Not the Better Playground for Console MMOs

Who among us has not had a debate, at some point, with someone over which is the better system, the Xbox 360 or the  PlayStation 3?  Every gamer seems to have their favorite, from which they can not be swayed.   So as the never ending debate rolls on, I offer more fuel for the fire… for anyone who is a 360 fan at least.

Recently Craig Alexander, VP for Turbine product development, stated the 360 will be better for bringing MMOs to consoles.  As Turbine has a project in development, they have found certain set backs while looking at the PS3 in the MMO arena.

  1. The Blu-ray drive on the PS3 is actually slower in seek and access time than the DVD drive on the Xbox 360. Once the Blu-ray gets up to speed, it can handle a large amount of data. Just not in seeking and accessing, which is a pain for streaming when you’re playing something like an MMO.
  2. The memory architecture is different. When you’re dealing with main memory, you work with “256ish MB” on the PS3 vs “512ish MB” on the 360.
  3. The tools aren’t as friendly on the PS3. That includes the performance monitor tools, the debugger tools … everything.
  4. Migrating a project from the Xbox 360 to the PS3 is much harder than moving from the PS3 to the 360.

If you are not a fan of this game type, this probably won’t add any weight to your argument if you say the 360 is a dominate console. For all you fan boys out there however, take this information and run.
