Since the E3 convention when Sony first showcased their motion controller, the company have been quiet on all fronts concerning the project. Despite being planned for a 2010 release, not even a name has been disclosed to the public. However, the Electronic Arts CEO may well have let slip on the title for Sony’s little surprise.
When discussing pricing and innovation at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference John Riccitiello disclosed the following:
“In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace,” he said.
So is “Gem” the name for Sony’s motion control project?
IGN tried to pursue the slip further, asking both EA and Sony for confirmation. Sony simply stated that “No official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced.” EA offered a similar response by claiming that they couldn’t confirm the accuracy of the remark.
The comment may well have been a slip of the tongue, it may even simply be a code name for the project. We’ll just have to wait for Sony’s announcement, or for someone else to spill the beans.
