Week in Arcade: Tecmo Bowl Throwback

A single Arcade release amongst a stacked week of retail releases. We think it’ll be fine.

Tecmo Bowl Throwback

After an apparently successful return on the DS, minus the NFL license, Tecmo now goes digital for this remake of the classic Tecmo Super Bowl. The original 2-D version is here, but the new 3-D visuals are actually great. Not only do they maintain the speed and feel of the classic game, they breathe new life into it.

The mechanics remain the same, so you need to select a receiver, not just hit the proper button. It’s what makes Tecmo Bowl so tense, and it is rightfully left alone here. Season play and online are enough to justify a purchase, and yes, you can rename all of the players to shatter the EA-exclusive NFL contract.
