The much publicized hack of the PlayStation 3 by George Hotz, already in the court system, is gaining a foot hold amongst the mainstream. Modern Warfare 2 has become a hot zone of rampant cheating and hacking, leading to unplayable games, accounts being reset, and more. It’s not difficult to do anymore either as videos have popped up online showing kids performing absurd feats in-game.
Infinity Ward blames the recent crack, Robert Bowling responding with this quote:
“Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they’re played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform.”
That seems partially correct. No doubt the issue has reached catastrophic levels in recent days, the cheats and hacks more easily accessible than ever. Can anyone actually say though the issues weren’t there beforehand? How many messages did you get offering to rank you up for only $10? Those were hacked lobbies, and they existed (and still do) cross-platform. What was the response to those? Nothing. Ever look at the leaderboards? Million to one kill to death ratios dominate.
To state the current wave of games causing the problem is on Sony, yes, that’s understood. To say Activision/Infinity Ward is clean in this matter? That doesn’t sound right.
