It’s exciting to see an e-mail pop into the ol’ inbox stating that a new Xbox 360/PC compilation is coming out loaded with Dreamcast games. Score!
… or not.
Yes, it’s awesome that Sega is giving attention to one of the most undervalued pieces of gaming hardware ever released. The games leave a lot to be desired though: Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Sega Bass Fishing, and Space Channel 5: Part 2.
Out of all of the games on the system, probably one of the most diverse and unique software lineups out there, this is what they chose? Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi both just saw release on the Live Arcade (not to mention countless previous hardware releases), Sega Bass Fishing was ruled irrelevant by the greatness of Sega Marine Fishing, and Space Channel 5: Part 2… well, that one actually does work.
Why not work with other developers like Crave to get Red Dog, a fantastic vehicle shooter? They don’t even have to go that far, as Sega games like Samba De Amigo are a perfect fit (although music licensing could be an issue). Oh, and Speed Devils too, a nice mix of RPG and racing. There is a mountain of potential that is being unrealized, and before anyone says this is just a test to gauge interest, it’s not the way to do it. What Dreamcast fans are missing Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi from their line-ups? Assuming they don’t even know the wonders of Sega Marine Fishing, why pay for only two games?
The Dreamcast Collection hits February 22nd in the US.
