Funcom, developer of the Massively Multiplayer Online RPG Age of Conan, has unveiled a free-to-play option for the title, scheduled for this summer. This free-to-play model is designed to coincide with the release of the upcoming Hollywood film Conan the Barbarian. The game will receive a new content update and be renamed Age of Conan: Unrated.

By going “Unrated” the development team at Funcom hopes to be even more faithful to the world of Robert E. Howard. The team is currently working on new content for the Unrated re-launch, as well as movie tie-in content, which will introduce players to characters and content from the summer Conan film.

Players who opt to play using the free-to-play model can still reach the level cap as normal, but will have limited access to certain content. For example, free customers will only have access to four of the twelve playable classes, half of the game’s instanced dungeons, two of the game’s six raids and basic mounts options. Of course, free players can always purchase the additional content from Funcom should they desire it. Subscribers will be re-classed as Premium members, and will be able to play the game exactly as they have been. Funcom has created an FAQ listing the differences between the two payment models, which you can read here.

“The online world of Hyboria is constantly expanding as we continue to introduce new gameplay features and new content, and we truly believe that ‘Age of Conan: Unrated’ will offer something truly new and unique to both new players and to those have already experienced the brutal online world of Conan the Barbarian,” says Creative Director and Executive Producer Craig Morrison.
