As if EA didn’t have enough developers under their belt, they can now add PopCap, casual developer of Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled. The deal runs $750 million, including $650 million and $100 million of EA’s stock shares. See, EA is broke and those online passes are needed. *sarcasm*
David Roberts, PopCap’s CEO stated that he chose EA because they “recast their culture around making great digital games.” That, or it was a $750 million deal. You know, either way.
The deal was rumored for a few weeks, the rumblings and groaning around the ‘net generally negative towards the acquisition. PopCap was enormously consumer and media friendly, plus they controlled their own product. They didn’t have to deal with anyone else. Now, things are certainly more complicated regardless of what the press releases might say.
