GameStop Taking Deux Ex OnLive Codes Out of PC Version

Looking to buy a physical copy of the latest Deux Ex title, Human Revolution? Can we take this moment NOT to recommend GameStop for said purchase?

The company has issued a memo to stores telling them to remove the free OnLive edition of the game from the case. Why? “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons,” states Beth Sharum, public relations representative.

GameStop is effectively rendering the games used, taking a promotional copy of the game away from the consumer, robbing OnLive of customers, and generating enormous amounts of bad press. Surely those codes will soon be on eBay too.

The case is doubly curious because the PS3 version of Portal 2 shipped with a code for a free download of the PC version via Steam. GameStop saw nothing wrong with that, and certainly Steam is a wider scaled competitor than OnLive.

Now, let’s all sit back and watch this PR disaster unfold. Beth Sharum, no one wants to be you right now.
