Conrad B. Hart returns with painful dialogue and glitchy, trapping design in this somewhat serviceable update. Flashback’s clumsiness was always locked within weighted, thickly animated movements. For this update, fluidity has been added to Hart’s repertoire, while maintaining a determined approach to platforming. Action set-ups have been induced to a detriment of atmosphere, asking Hart to blast robots with frequency instead of taking leisurely exploratory routes. Map systems make Flashback inviting and less confusing, if at a loss of mysterious qualities. Splurging on cinemas and chintzy scoring, Flashback’s core ideals remain, if rocked by a somewhat questionable do over.
