Epic Games held the Gears of War property since its inception, a tent pole series for the developer through its four game franchise existence. As of today, the series becomes wholly owned by Microsoft. The property was purchased for an undisclosed amount.
The Gears of War franchise spawns beyond games, finding room for novelizations (telling the further stories of this war torn planet Sera) and physical merchandise including action figures.
With the purchase, Microsoft has assigned development of the next Gears title – set for Xbox One – to Vancouver-based Black Tusk Studios. The AAA focused studio debuted a new IP at E3 last year before going silent on the project.
