Cave, the Japanese developer best known for keeping the SHMUP alive, are cancelling their Western operations. The Cave World blog is set to shut down at the end of February along with the associated Twitter account.
Cave is best known for hardcore genre entries such as DoDonPachi, Deathsmiles, and Akai Katana here in the States. Many of their core titles found a way to iOS devices as well. The genre saw a resurgence thanks to digital in the previous generation. Their final attempt to crack the market on Xbox 360 was Deathsmiles 2X, released digitally on Xbox 360 without any translation work.
The studio will continue to focus on mobile and social media games, although it would see their efforts in the console SHMUP arena (at least in the US) are now in the past.
